Among the most visually stunning expressions of the yoga practice, the Scorpion Pose (Vrschikasana 1) is at once an inversion, an opening for the shoulders, and a backbend. The pose serves to develop strength, balance, flexibility in the body; determination and perseverance in the mind. On a deeper level Vrschikasana 1 not only suggests new possibilities for the body, but in striving to perfect the pose, offers a door opening to dramatic transformation and an evolving awareness of the potential for accepting humility into one’s heart.
Not surprisingly, Mr. Land has chosen to sculpt the pose in its fullest expression –light, and gravity defying – the torso lifting effortlessly from shoulder girdle upward, the feet dropped with control, yet in abandon, lightly touching the crown of the head. Overall, the pose is one of strength, balance, and harmony.
